11.01.2009: SPORT ABOUT SHOWS HEART

During the 2009 summer program, a few kids were inspired to start a baseball club in Hue. Since its inception, the club has grown to over 20 members, many of which are new to the game, but are nevertheless enthusiastic about the sport, and eager to learn the intricacies of 'America's Pastime'.

Baseball is relatively new to the country of Vietnam, but with the passion and enthusiasm for the game that the kid’s have, you would think that baseball is a traditional sport.  The problem, as usual, lies in economics: the team simply did not have enough money collectively to purchase the necessary equipment to play the game.  The only gloves the kids had were sent to them by distant relatives, those lucky enough to have relatives abroad.  The rest had to catch the ball bare handed, or just not play at all.

Today, with the creation of the “Swing for the Fences” project, they won’t go without equipment any longer.  Thanks to Grant and Denise, owners of Sport About stores in Encinitas and Vista, CA, the children will now have gloves, bats, and uniforms, creating an identity for the team, and giving them the tools they need to further their goals as players.

In addition, the owners have donated over $5,500 worth of athletic apparel for the program, which the organization will be re-selling in the US to raise money to further the athletic goals of ETA4.

The team will be updating ETA4 on their progress as a team, and are looking forward to playing in a countrywide tournament in the spring.

Thank you so much to sport About for their generous support of this project.
